The AubreyRose Tea Room is delighted to welcome you this Christmas Season to spend time with us and enjoy a festive Christmas Tea.

Each year we prepare a special menu from December through the first week of January that truly embodies the holiday spirit.

The experience begins as you are greeted with our delightful sights, scents and sounds of this Blessed Christmas Season. While sipping our spiced Eggnog, you will be able to select one of our fine loose leaf tea choices, such as, our special Christmas tea blend (black tea flavored with spices), our traditional English Breakfast, Cranberry Autumn, Black Currant, or for the more adventurous, Hot Cinnamon Spice, just to name a few.

Here is a preview of a few of our holiday dishes: a roasted cauliflower bisque, our traditional egg salad sandwich spiced with curry and accented with fresh watercress, English cucumber sandwich with fresh dill cream and a variety of “mouth watering” savories. Our delicious desserts are baked with love and the selection will change throughout the season. This year, our signature bread pudding is enhanced with “spirited” cranberries and topped with a warm cranberry chutney and cream. The experience is topped off with our famous sugar plum scones served with lemon curd and AubreyRose cream.

Please browse our menu page to see what other delights we may have to tempt your palates.

So since it is that time of year when family and friends gather, why not celebrate with us here at the The AubreyRose for a wonderful and relaxing Christmas Afternoon Tea.

We look forward to serving you.

High Tea in San Diego is becoming more and more popular. However, the term high tea is an interesting one. Many San Diego residents might think of high tea as the pinnacle of the tradition of drinking tea, but it actually refers to something a little different.

Traditionally, high tea was a meal that was eaten in the early evening. The terms, high and low refer to the tables that the meal was served upon. ”Low” tea would be served, sitting down in a sitting room on “lower” tables, like a coffee table, for example. ”High” tea would be served in the dinning room, along with other more substantial dishes.

For most Americans, the term, “High Tea” refers to what is actually the traditional, afternoon tea. For others, they may be thinking of a Tea party, in which tea, small sandwiches, cakes, etc are served. At the AubreyRose Tea Room, we serve afternoon tea, and host many tea parties for various groups and gatherings.

We’d love for you to join us and see what the art of fine tea is all about.

Our loose leaf tea or loose tea as some call it, is high quality, organic tea. The tea leaves are prepared with centuries old techniques that really help to bring out the full flavor. From Herbal tea to Black tea, we offer a large selection. We will often update our offerings throughout the year, from season to season, and on special occasions.

Black Tea

Black tea is widely available in the United States. However, finding a quality black tea can be difficult. At our San Diego Tea Room, we offer several varieties of Black tea. Included are: Darjeeling, Ceylon, Assam, and African just to name a few. Also popular is our English Breakfast, Black Currant, Paris, Holiday, Caribe, and Apple Cinnamon.

Green Tea

Green teas from China and Japan are very popular right now. The Chinese like to say they are the “Hometown” of tea. If so, it is a large town. You can find Green tea in many areas of China, and it makes for one of the most well known varieties. We carry an excellent selection of Green tea. Just ask for it next time you’re in our shop.

Oolong Tea

Oolong tea is an interesting variety. It is a cross between both Black tea and Green tea. Light and full of aroma, Oolong tea is wonderful. Likely first appearing in China’s Wuyi Mountains, tea makers tried to catch the attention of the emperor. Today, you can still find the best Oolong teas from China, namely Taiwan.

At the AubreyRose Tea Room, we carry a large assortment of loose leaf teas that continue to wow our customers. Stop by soon to share a cup of tea with us.

By Shay K. McKinley
August 5, 2004

Picture a softly lit room furnished with antiques and lace tablecloths, with classical music playing in the background. You sit amid this elegance sipping tea and sampling an array of sandwiches and scones.

Sound impossible in today’s busy world? Think again. Two San Diego teahouses offer not only great food and service, but also the chance to slow down and savor any occasion.

Aubrey Rose Tea Room

8362 La Mesa Blvd., La Mesa; (619) 461-4832.

One of La Mesa’s hidden treasures, the Aubrey Rose Tea Room is the perfect place to catch up with an old friend, treat someone to a special lunch or simply get away from the frenzied pace of daily life.

Aubrey Rose has the capacity to serve large groups or tuck away a party of two in a pleasant corner. Ornate curtains, lampshades and tablecloths decorate every nook of the room, while bubbling fountains and soft music add to the ambience.

Owner Lorna Wyatt is all grace and hospitality, pouring tea for her patrons and chatting with them about their day.

“Tea brings back a time of gentility and civility to our lives, and I wanted to share that with as many people as possible,” she said.

Aubrey Rose offers a selection of more than 50 loose-leaf teas and tisanes, or herbal teas. The house blend is a delightful tropical China black tea with peach, mango, apple, orange and guava flavoring. Another favorite is the Cream Earl Grey, with a more mellow taste than its traditional counterpart.

Wyatt offers two types of full-service afternoon tea: The Lady Anne Tea features assorted tea sandwiches; seasonal fruit; fresh baked scones with mock devonshire cream, lemon curd and fruit preserves; and various pastries for $18.95. The Queen Victoria Tea, for $23.95, adds on an extra sandwich, tea breads and a chef’s choice of a savory such as quiche.

Children can partake of the Princess Sophia Tea, which includes assorted sandwiches, seasonal fruit, “sconettes,” pastries and more for $16.95.

Walk-ins are welcome to enjoy the Cream tea – a pot of tea and a scone for $9.95 – if space is available.

The delicious variety of tea sandwiches includes a superb chicken salad with tarragon and pecans on date-nut bread; blue cheese with pears and walnuts on toasted wheat; and avocado and bacon with sprouts.

Wyatt’s pastry chefs vary the dessert offerings, but she confesses to a weakness for bread pudding with whiskey sauce and serves that regularly.

All of the teas served at Aubrey Rose are available for purchase, along with numerous tea accouterments. Aubrey Rose also carries antiques, fine bone china tea ware, bridal accessories, home decor, candles, linens and all things Victorian.

Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Reservations are recommended.

May 15, 2005

For a spot of tranquillity and gentility, look no further than your local tea room. The English tradition of afternoon tea has jumped the pond and is alive and well in San Diego.

A trio of tearooms with a British bent have emerged here in recent years as oases in a sea of cacophonous coffee emporiums. Swathed in soothing hues and Victoriana, these rooms dispense refreshment in the form of wee sandwiches, scones with jam, and petite pastries – everything required to revive the soul and sustain the body over the long haul until dinner.

The Aubrey Rose Tea Room is one such jewel tucked in La Mesa’s crown. Softly lit and furnished with antiques and lace-draped tables, Aubrey Rose provides a yesteryear elegance in which to nibble sandwiches and sip tea.

Two full-service afternoon teas are offered: the Lady Anne features assorted sandwiches such as chicken salad with tarragon and pecans on date-nut bread, scones with mock Devonshire cream, lemon curd and fruit preserves, and pastries for $19.95. The Queen Victoria, for $24.95, adds an extra sandwich, tea breads and a savory choice such as quiche.

Space permitting, walk-ins may partake of the Cream Tea – a pot of brew and a scone – for $9.95.
